Organizing notes (folders, pinning, archiving, undo)
Describes monthlet 1.0.1.
- Folders: create folders in the sidebar to organize notes. Each folder can have its own theme and list sort order.
- Creating items (the + button): the "+" at the top of the sidebar lets you choose "New note" or "New folder"; both open a name dialog. New items are created inside the currently focused folder — the one you clicked in the sidebar (shown with a light highlight). If no folder is focused, they go into the folder of the note you have open (or the top level otherwise). You can also right-click any folder and choose "New note / New folder" to create inside that folder.
- Drag to move: drag a note or folder onto another folder in the sidebar to move it. A single click selects; use ⌘-click to toggle individual items and Shift-click to select a range, then drag the selection to move several at once (double-click to open a note). Moving does not change folders' expanded/collapsed state.
- Duplicating (copy): right-click a note and choose "Duplicate" to make a copy in the same folder (the title gets a "copy" suffix). With the keyboard, select note(s) in the sidebar (click, or ⌘/Shift-click for several) and press ⌘C then ⌘V to duplicate. If nothing is selected, the note you currently have open is used. If a folder is focused (clicked), the copy is pasted into that folder. A duplicate is created as a new note; links in its body to other notes keep pointing at the original notes. When several notes are selected, right-click to act on them all at once ("Duplicate N notes" / "Delete N notes").
- Note menu (⋯): the "⋯" button at the top-right of a note opens the same menu as right-clicking a note in the sidebar — rename / duplicate / pin / archive / reveal in Finder / File Explorer / export / delete, plus "New" ▶ (create a spreadsheet / note in the same folder), "Details" (title / created & updated dates / file path), "Attach file" (register a file in the Attachments panel — this was the toolbar 📎 button), switching the theme (submenu), "Show HTML source" (view the saved .html read-only), and "Copy path" (copy the note file's absolute path). The theme switch is the pulldown that used to sit in the toolbar, now folded into this menu. In reference mode you can also right-click the note body to get the same Reveal in Finder / File Explorer / Copy path / Show HTML source / Export actions.
- Pinning: pin frequently used notes to keep them at the top of the list / folder. You can also ask chat to "pin X".
- Archiving: archive notes you no longer need to hide them from the normal list (this is not deletion). Re-show them via Settings → General "Show archived"; you can unarchive at any time.
- Sorting: sort the note list by updated date / created date / title (ascending or descending). Ask chat e.g. "sort by most recently updated".
- Show non-note files: turn on Settings (⚙) → Vault → "Show non-note files in the sidebar" to also list PDFs, images, and source files (.xlsx / .csv / .docx, etc.) in your vault in the folder tree, shown with their file extensions (this setting is per-vault). Images (png / jpg / jpeg / gif / webp / svg / bmp / avif), PDFs, and text files (.txt / .md / .markdown / .csv / .tsv / .log / .json) open in an in-app tab as a read-only preview when double-clicked (no editing). Other types (.xlsx / .docx, etc.) open in the OS default app on double-click. For any type, right-click "Open with default app" to use the OS app, or "Reveal in Finder / File Explorer". These files are not searched, and cannot be renamed / deleted / moved. While previewing a .md / .markdown file, the "Convert to note" button at the top imports it into the same folder as an editable monthlet note (.html) — the original .md is kept. When this setting is on, these files also appear as cards in the gallery (All notes) and open the same way (in both flat and by-folder views). Note that .html files created outside monthlet (external HTML without monthlet metadata) are always shown in the sidebar with an "html" badge regardless of this setting, and open as a read-only preview in an in-app tab when clicked (a "created outside monthlet, cannot be edited" banner appears; the original file is never modified).
- File thumbnails in the gallery: when "Show non-note files in the sidebar" is on, image and PDF cards in the gallery show a scaled-down image or the first page of the PDF (made as the cards come into view, and remade when the file changes). Other files (.docx and so on) keep their icon. Folder galleries work the same way.
- Undo / Redo: step backward and forward through note edits. If you do not like a chat-generated result, Undo to revert it.
