HelpWriting notes
File attachments (add images, PDFs, etc. to a note)
Describes monthlet 1.0.1.
You can attach files (images, PDFs, documents, etc.) to a note. Attachments are real files under the Vault: files already inside the Vault are referenced without copying (shareable across notes), and files outside the Vault are copied into the note's folder first.
How to attach and what happens:
- Drag & drop into the note body: after a confirmation, images, videos, and audio are embedded inline at the end of the note (videos/audio play in place with controls), a PDF puts its first page into the body as a picture (clicking it opens the PDF — handy for keeping receipts or booking confirmations where you can see them), and other files are registered in the "Attachments" panel below (not placed in the body).
- The "Attach file" item in the ⋯ menu: picked files — including images — are only registered in the "Attachments" panel (not embedded in the body). This was previously the toolbar paperclip (📎) button, now moved into the note's ⋯ menu at the top-right.
- Right-click "Attach file" in the body: explicitly inserts a link to the file into the body at the cursor / selection.
The "Attachments" panel at the bottom lists every file the note references. Click a row to open it, right-click for "Show in Finder / File Explorer", and use the ✕ at the right to remove the reference (the real file is never deleted). Executable files (such as .app, .command or .exe) are not opened; their location is shown in Finder / File Explorer instead.
When you open the saved .html directly in an external browser, only links/images explicitly placed in the body appear (panel-managed attachments are not in the body, so they do not show).
Broken links: if an attachment is moved or deleted, the reference breaks. Images/links placed in the body are shown in red with a ⚠ in the body, and the panel marks them "Missing" in red. Use the panel's Relink (or click the broken row) to pick the new location. There is no automatic path rewriting (detect + manual recovery).
🛑 A note attachment and a chat attachment are different things. Attaching a file to a note does not send it to the AI. To let the AI see an image or a PDF, send it from the + button (attach file) in the chat box. That said, for a PDF that lives in your vault you can just name the file and the AI will read the text out of it (figures and layout are not read; a scanned PDF has no text layer, so it cannot be read).
monthlet is free on macOS and Windows.
