Reference mode and edit mode

Describes monthlet 1.0.1.

Notes open in "reference mode" (read-only) by default, so you can read AI-generated notes without accidentally changing them. The exception is a note you have just created: right after creation the focus moves to the chat input so you can start by talking. If no AI key is set, or the chat is shown as a tab or collapsed, the note opens in edit mode instead.

  • To edit: use the reference⇄edit toggle at the top of the note (it shows the current mode with an icon — click to switch) to enter "edit mode". In edit mode you can click text to edit it directly and use the block right-click menu (delete, etc.).
  • Reorder/delete: in edit mode, hover a block to reveal a drag handle (⠿), an add (+) and a delete (✕) on its left. Drag the handle to change a block's position, and click ✕ (or select it and press Delete) to remove a block.
  • Resize (width): in edit mode, hover an image, video, or external video embed to reveal a resize handle on its right edge. Drag it to change the display width (aspect ratio is kept). The change is saved and is also reflected in thumbnails and the external browser. One drag is one Undo (⌘Z).
  • Add a block: click + (or right-click an empty area) to open the type picker — Text, Heading, lists, Table, Callout, Image/Video/Audio, Two columns, Card, Tabs, Timeline, Stats, and more, organized by category. Right-clicking empty space adds at the bottom. An empty note shows an "Add a block" button near the top.
  • Multi-select: ⌘-click to select several blocks; ⌘A (Ctrl+A) selects every block in the note. With several selected, press Delete to remove them at once (with confirmation), or use the drag handle to move them together.
  • What reference mode still allows: select text to add/remove links, click links to navigate, ⌘F search, and select a block to ask chat about it — only direct text editing is off.
  • To go back: in edit mode, press the toggle (showing "Edit") to return to reference mode.
  • Edit as Markdown: click the Markdown toggle (next to the reference⇄edit toggle) at the top of the note to edit it as raw Markdown text (a third mode alongside reference and edit; while in Markdown, pressing the reference⇄edit toggle leaves Markdown and returns to the shown mode). This is handy for writing quickly with the keyboard or editing in the Markdown style you know from tools like Obsidian. When you switch back to another mode (reference/edit), the Markdown you typed is converted back into blocks and applied to the note. Headings, lists, tables, callouts, code, mermaid diagrams, and math round-trip cleanly. Rich blocks like charts, video, audio, two-column, and tabs have no Markdown equivalent, so while editing they appear as placeholders (a `monthlet-block` code block) and are preserved as-is when you save (not flattened). Leave a placeholder line in place to keep its block, delete the line to remove that block, or move it to move the block — the position follows your text edits. An info banner appears at the top when you enter Markdown mode on a note that contains such blocks. If you accidentally break a placeholder code block (for example, an unclosed ` ``` ` fence or an edited `id=` line), that block cannot be restored and would be dropped. When you try to leave the mode, a confirmation dialog warns you so you can pick "Back to Markdown editing" and fix the formatting (no confirmation appears when you intentionally delete a placeholder line; and even if you choose "Delete and save", you can undo with Cmd+Z).
